The Queen of Cups from the Deck of the Bastard by Tarot by Seven!

The Queen of Cups represents intuition, emotion, and spiritual connection. In this image, the Queen is peering into her chalice as if she were looking into her very soul. This is the kind of lady you want by your side during the process of self-discovery. She is caring and tender, and she understands that the way is often difficult, that there are sometimes unfathomable depths we must dive into. She encourages you to feel all your feelings and accept them with open arms.

Above her is an Energetic Pyramid which is used for transforming lower-frequency energies into the higher vibes of peace and harmony. The Pyramid symbolizes the steps we must take on the upward-path of personal growth:

“The pyramid represents the sense of harmony and unity within ourselves and with the environment to which we aspire. The individual building blocks of the pyramid are lessons we have already successfully completed, i.e. the ability we have already learned of how to live the basic rights of existence. As soon as the top of the pyramid has been built to the necessary height and the whole structure has been cleanly rendered the highest goal can be said to have been reached: The respective person is then in perpetual harmony with [herself] and [her] environment.”

This resonates with the value of harmony represented by the Queen of Cups. She is also a Queen of Compassion, and in many ways reminds me of Quan Yin, the Goddess of Compassion: “One of the several stories surrounding Quan Yin is that she was a Buddhist who through great love and sacrifice during life, had earned the right to enter Nirvana after death. However, like Avlokiteshvara, while standing before the gates of Paradise she heard a cry of anguish from the earth below. Turning back to earth, she renounced her reward of bliss eternal but in its place found immortality in the hearts of the suffering.”

quanyin2She turned back from the gates of heaven in order to bring compassion to those still suffering.

Compassion for the Self and the Other is vital, as through compassion we honor that we are in different places and do not stand in judgement of one another. When we can see ourselves in others, we remain in touch with our inner essence and remain open to the messages of the Universe. Engaging in spiritual practice (meditation, conscious breathing, mindful awareness, etc) also keeps our intuition open to the small, still voice we might otherwise miss. The Queen of Cups is open to the messages of the Universe because she knows she IS the Universe.

  1. very lovely. The queen of cups is just who I need right now. What you said is spot on, thank you. ….and I particularly liked the bit about pyramids…pyramids (and triangles) are frequent visuals that come to me during meditation….I have been searching for an explanation of their symbolism for a while now. Thank you!
